It takes place in a somewhat sinister environment but really opened my eyes to how people exist in certain regions of China. It’s a stark, barren, treeless existence, but the city is preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics with propaganda blasting through loudspeakers in the style of real communist China. While it’s a thought-provoking film, there are several passages that are quite humorous and while it’s not heavy on dialogue, it’s what’s NOT said that makes you think. I can see why it was a hit at CANNES.
