A remake of El Agente Topo (2020)
Synopsis
Charles, a retiree, gets a new chance at life when he answers an ad for a private investigator and becomes a mole in an undercover investigation at a nursing home. Based on the Chilean documentary El Agente Topo. Reviewing this series requires a knowledge of context and content.
Three parents struggling with the challenges of assisted living made it more enjoyable and moving
Ted Danson plays an eighty-year-old widower (Charles) who struggles to establish a new routine after his wife dies from health issues related to dementia. Through a series of classic sitcom plot devices, Charles lands a job as an undercover detective at an assisted living facility (formerly called a “nursing home”) to solve a jewelry theft. His boss, Lilah Richcreek Estrada as Julie, is black and white, anything goes to solve the case, a sarcastic counterpoint to Danson’s kind and honest Charles.
The jokes and commentary about assisted living and the things that happen there are also funny
The two quickly find themselves at odds with the facility’s director (played brilliantly by Stephanie Beatriz as Didi), Charles’ daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various residents and their many silly problems. There are a few poorly conceived stunts centered around older women who are horny that don’t fit with the rest of the story, and Charles’ daughter’s outrageously rude (and interchangeable) three teenage sons are distracting and irrelevant. The best parts are Charles’ slow immersion in his new community with a few social interactions with the other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson.
The awkward exchanges between Charles and his boss Julie are funny
And while Emily’s daughter’s home life isn’t particularly interesting, there are some great scenes between her and Charles in later episodes. The summary isn’t particularly difficult to figure out (who stole what and what happens to Charles), but the sentimental aspects of Charles reawakening and coming to terms with his wife’s death are very worthwhile. The series does have some minor roles played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that may bring a smile to the faces of older viewers, but they are mostly wasted on pointless jokes about old people and sex.
Overall, I recommend this series, especially for viewers in their 40s and up
